Soul Tacoma’s Breakfast and Dinner Menus

New restaurants don’t often pop up in the Proctor neighborhood of Tacoma, especially those of the Latin American/soul food variety. Soul has opened in the former Old House Cafe location, dishing up favorites like fried chicken, amazing sweet potatoes, fried okra, mofongo, jambalaya, fried catfish…and much more.

Menus for both breakfast and dinner read of classic comfort food favorites with a dose of Cuban, Puerto Rican, Peruvian and soul food flavors.

When I first heard about Soul’s opening, I was really excited, not just for a new dining option with food I couldn’t get anywhere else nearby, but because of one thing: BREAKFAST. Tacoma is notoriously short on breakfast restaurants, so any and all are welcome.

My recent visit for dinner was full of delicious flavors and textures. Go for dinner during their daily happy hour, from 4 to 7 p.m. and all day Monday that gets diners 20 percent off their final bill — an excellent deal.

From what I gather, the menus aren’t online anywhere else at the moment, so I thought I’d share them with you. Click the links below to check them out.

New Sausages at The Red Hot

The Red Hot is one of my very favorite places in Tacoma. The food is consistently good, the beers local and cold, and the atmosphere easy and comfortable.

I’m normally a creature of habit when ordering at The Red Hot, but this time I was told there’s two new sausages on the menu, and I had to give them a try. Sure, they have their Test Kitchen Thursdays each week, with new and creative combinations, but the two new sausages are on the menu for a couple months. They’ll be rotated out eventually, so get ’em while you can.

Pho 701 Becomes Orange Door + Menu Update

Walking around Downtown Tacoma this weekend, I noticed a change at Pho 701 Bistro and Bar. There were new signs in the window, and a new name, the Orange Door. Immediately, I hoped Pho 701 had not gone out of business. There had been quite a few business changes in that space before, and I’d hate to see it happen again.

I talked with the owner, Toan Pham, and he informed me it was just an update to the business, not a new owner. “The name change was more to fit our demographics of an downtown location,” Pham said. “Ownership and chef did not change. Our clientele are more diversified, and we as restaurant grew with the changes.”

Pham also explained to me there is an updated menu, but the pho is still present. New items include wok stir-fried drunken noodles, Shanghai noodles (wok fried lo mein noodles), chow mein, provincial clay pot pork  and eggs, crab rangoon, wonton soup, as well as more vegan items.

I haven’t eaten there in a few months, but previous visits have included friendly service, clean decor, a relaxed atmosphere, decent prices and tasty food.

MSM Deli (Magical Sandwich Makers)

Looking for a great deal and a satisfying lunch in Tacoma?

Look no further than MSM Deli (or Magical Sandwich Makers — yes, that’s really what it stands for).

Don’t be afraid of the sketchy mini mart exterior.  Sure, you can get your cigarettes and beer there.  But that’s just the beginning.

Craving a good sandwich for lunch, I dragged my brother along with me to explore.  “There’s cops eating here.  You know it’s good,” was his observation.

Before going in, i asked one of those cops, “So is this place good?”  “Best sandwich in Tacoma” was his reply.  We’ll just see. Continue reading →
